Double Bag Inflatable Pipe Welding System
The Double Bag Inflatable Pipe Welding System from MJS Purge Systems is a patented pipe weld purging system designed for fast, reliable and efficient weld purging. Used for around 90% of traditional pipe welding purge applications, it helps create the low-oxygen environment needed to achieve clean, oxide-free weld roots.
Quick and easy to use, the system is positioned inside the pipe and inflated to form a purge chamber around the weld area. A luminous centre strip helps the operator align the system accurately with the weld gap. Once in place, the purge gas inflates the bags to create a dam at each side of the weld zone. When the pre-set pressure is reached, the valve releases purge gas into the space between the two bags, forcing oxygen-containing air out through the exhaust tubes.
To confirm the correct purging level has been reached, oxygen levels can be checked using the Handy Purge Monitor. Once oxygen has been reduced to the required level, welding can begin, helping produce an even, high-quality oxidation-free weld. After welding is complete, the purge system can be removed by disconnecting the purge gas supply and allowing the bags to deflate.
Heat Resistant Purge Systems for Pre-Heated Pipe Welds
MJS Purge Systems also manufactures heat resistant purge systems for pre-heated pipe welding applications. These systems feature cylindrical inflation dams connected by 1 metre of insulated spinal hose, with a pre-set purge valve and central exhaust. Pull loops are fitted to the front and back of the system, while ceramic fibre insulated front faces provide added protection in the heat zone.
Manufactured using specialist high-temperature materials, these systems are designed to perform in demanding welding environments where heat resistance is critical.
Materials
Heat resistant purge systems are manufactured using:
- Nomex cloth
- Premium fire protection sleeve
- Grey silicone outer sleeve
- 6-micron calcium silicate yarn inner sleeve
- PTFE tubing
- Ceramic fibre
- Kevlar thread
These materials help protect the system against high temperatures, radiant heat, direct flames and liquid metal splashes in the space between the dams.
Temperature Performance
The heat resistant purge system is designed for:
- 350°C continuous operating temperature
- 500°C short-term operating temperature

Both standard and heat resistant double bag purge systems are available in sizes from 2" up to 48".
Double purge systems are also available in a choice of colours and can be manufactured in the following materials:
