MJS Purge Systems Ltd is a UK designer and manufacturer of patented pipe purge systems, pipe stoppers, inflatable pipeline sealing products and oxygen monitors for welding, construction and industrial applications.
The business began in 1998, when Martyn and Julie Smith started making air bags and purge systems from their double garage in Leicester. From those early beginnings, MJS grew by working closely with customers, developing practical solutions to real site challenges and building a strong reputation for quality, reliability and innovation.
Over the years, MJS has become known for designing products that improve safety, reduce downtime and make pipe preparation and welding more efficient. A key part of that success has been listening to customers and turning real-world requirements into specialist products that deliver clear performance benefits.
In 1999, MJS introduced the Rapid Purge System in response to a customer request for a better way to reduce purge gas use on larger pipe sizes. The result was a unique and highly effective design that helped save time, lower gas consumption and reduce welding costs.
MJS also developed the ATO pipe stopper, or Air Test Only pipe stopper, as a lightweight, collapsible solution for the construction industry. Designed for easier handling, single-person operation and improved access into manholes and restricted spaces, it quickly became a practical choice for on-site testing and blocking work.
When a customer needed a simple way to measure oxygen levels inside pipelines before welding, MJS designed its own oxygen monitor. The result was a handheld, easy-to-use and cost-effective instrument that helps welders confirm when oxygen levels are low enough to support a clean, high-quality weld.
As the business developed, MJS built strong working relationships across the industry and became a trusted manufacturing partner for companies. These relationships reflect the confidence placed in MJS not just as a supplier, but as the original maker of specialist purge and sealing products.
That is still central to who we are today. We hold the patents and we manufacture the products ourselves. This gives our customers confidence in the quality, consistency and technical knowledge behind every product we supply.
In 2024, following the well-earned retirement of Martyn and Julie Smith, MJS Purge Systems Ltd was established to take the company forward. The business moved to a new factory in Peterlee, where a new team was trained to meet growing production demand and new systems were introduced to support future development.
Today, MJS Purge Systems Ltd continues to build on that legacy by designing and manufacturing patented pipe purge systems, pipe stoppers, inflatable sealing systems and related pipeline products for customers in the UK and beyond.
